Synopsis

KATIE’S TO-DO LIST: 1. Go to rehab 2. Befriend/spy on “It Girl” 3. Write killer exposé 4. Land dream job Piece of cake! Katie Sandford has just gotten an interview at her favourite music magazine, The Line. It’s the chance of a lifetime. So what does she do? Goes out to celebrate — and shows up still drunk at the interview. No surprise, she doesn’t get the job, but the folks at The Line think she might be perfect for another assignment for their sister gossip rag. All Katie has to do is follow It Girl Amber Sheppard into rehab. If she can get the inside scoop (and complete the 30-day program without getting kicked out), they’ll reconsider her for the job at The Line. Katie takes the job. But things get complicated when real friendships develop, a cute celebrity handler named Henry gets involved, and Katie begins to realize she may be in rehab for a reason. Katie has to make a decision — is publishing the article worth everything she has to lose?

Romantic Times (RT) Reviewers’ Choice Award Nominee for Commercial Fiction (2012)
Picked by Elle Canada as the first of its “Top 3 Books” (February, 2010)

"With fresh, fast-paced storytelling and a personable, self-deprecating protagonist, McKenzie whirls a perfectly indulgent tale."
— Publishers Weekly

"McKenzie endows what could have been a formulaic, tired plot with finely drawn characters, broad humor, and a sweet and satisfying romance between equals. Her descriptions of rehab are as candid as they are sympathetic. She is a writer to watch."
— Booklist

"If Bridget Jones’s Diary and High Fidelity had a literary baby, the result would be Spin. A funny heroine and plentiful music references make this book a stand out. McKenzie’s tale of girls gone wild and gone to rehab is ripped straight from the latest tabloid headlines and will keep readers intrigued to the very last page."
— RT Magazine (Top Pick)

"McKenzie’s deliciously tart sense of humor and her tough yet tender heroine are as refreshing as a perfectly mixed mimosa."
— Chicago Tribune

"Kate Sandford is someone you know: she’s snarky and a little bit fragile, and when she has the chance to make up for blowing the opportunity of a lifetime, you can’t help but root for her even when she’s not rooting for herself. Catherine McKenzie has written a winning first novel – SPIN is funny, touching, and impossible to put down."
— Shawn Klomparens, author of Jessica Z. and Two Years, No Rain

"Catherine McKenzie, in her debut novel, ably invites the reader into the story… For readers who enjoy a light, breezy love story, this book clips along well and satisfies. Many will likely find this book enjoyable and a worthy debut effort by Catherine McKenzie."
— New York Journal of Books

"In this hilarious and heart-warming coming-of-age, Catherine McKenzie puts a comedic spin on a heavy reality in her engaging novel, SPIN. In the hands of vibrant and endearing Kate, rock bottom has never felt so relatable, or brought such a sense of adventure to readers. SPIN touches on the indefatigable theme of redemption and gives a tale as old as time a fresh voice. An addicting page-turner, SPIN is the perfect escape with a delicious side of eye-opening discovery."

"Just in time for poolside lounging, Montreal author Catherine McKenzie makes her chick lit debut with Spin, this decade’s answer to Bridget Jones with a smidge of Gossip Girl Drama. (…) This frothy little novel is best served with a fruity umbrella drink."
— Vitamin Daily

"With McKenzie’s engaging debut, you’ll be up late rooting for the loveable and broken Kate Sandford as she stumbles her way towards sobriety by way of a bit of tabloid journalism. Spin is honest, funny, and fresh."
— Julie Buxbaum, author of The Opposite of Love and After You

"In Kate Sandford, Catherine McKenzie has created a 21st-century Bridget Jones – dark and delicate, broken yet strong."
— Tish Cohen, author of Inside Out Girl and Town House

"Imagine if Bridget Jones fell into a million little pieces, flew over the cuckoo’s nest, and befriended Lindsay Lohan along the way, and you are beginning to grasp the literary roller coaster ride that is Catherine McKenzie’s Spin. Filled with brutal honesty and wry humour, Spin is a story for anyone who has every woken up hungover and thought, ‘Do I have a problem? Yes – I need to find a greasy breakfast.’ And by that I mean everyone I know."
— Leah McLaren, Globe and Mail Columnist, author of National Bestseller The Continuity Girl

"Spin is intelligent, poignant, and a bit of rollicking, good fun."
— Cathy Marie Buchanan, New York Times bestselling author of The Day the Falls Stood Still

— Holly Kennedy, author of The Penny Tree, The Silver Compass and The Tin Box

"With Spin, Catherine McKenzie taps into both the ridiculous and sublime elements of the world her character inhabit, and, more importantly, points out how those are often exactly the same. A thoroughly engaging debut."
— David Sprague, Music Journalist, contributor to Variety, Village Voice and Rolling Stone
