Synopsis

When everyone thinks you’re dead, how do you start your life over again? Emma Tupper, a young lawyer with a bright future, sets out on a journey after her mother’s death: to Africa, a place her mother always wanted to visit. But her mother’s dying gift has unexpected consequences. Emma falls ill during the trip and is just recovering when a massive earthquake hits, turning her one-month vacation into a six-month ordeal. When Emma returns home, she’s shocked to find that her friends and colleagues believed she was dead, that her apartment has been rented to a stranger and that her life has gone on without her. Can Emma pick up where she left off? Should she? As Emma struggles to recreate her old life, everyone around her thinks she should change: her job, her relationships, and even herself. But does she really want to sacrifice everything she’s working so hard to gain?

Praise

"McKenzie has created a charming character in Emma, witty, extraordinarily level-headed, and blessed with grace under fire in the most trying of circumstances. Forgotten is the story of one young women’s life, broken down, reconstructed, and forever altered. It is an endearing story of discovery and transformation and the importance of turning lemons into lemonade."
— Booklist

"McKenzie is fast proving herself a force to be reckoned with in women’s fiction."
—Publishers Weekly

"McKenzie’s initial releases, Spin and Arranged, established her as an exciting new voice whose tone is both witty and captivating. While Spin tells the page-turning story of an undercover gossip journalist, Arranged centers on a novelist who considers having an arranged marriage. Both books, along with Forgotten, present richly layered heroines who are flawed, complicated and easy to identify with."
— USA Today

"Forgotten is a clever, satisfying diversion of a book, but where McKenzie really excels is in the pacing. Quick banter, the new challenges that spring up in Emma’s path and the tension McKenzie creates between her characters send the reader headlong through the pages to see if Emma gets to live happily ever after, near-death experience or not."
— The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

"Who hasn’t thought about the possibility of completely starting over? An engrossing novel from start to finish, Forgotten explores what happens when starting over isn’t exactly a choice."
— Barnes & Noble Community Blog, Recommended Fireside Reading (October 2012)
Sony ebook store Staff Pick (December 2012)

"This novel has such a refreshing take on your typical coming-of-age story. The characters are insightful and the dry humor is reminiscent of what you’ll find in a TV drama. From start to finish, readers will feel like they are on a reluctant journey with someone who didn’t set out to change her life. (…) a must-read."

"From her big city legal career to earthquake-battered Africa and back again, Emma’s whirlwind of location, circumstance and emotion involves many an unexpected twist. By turns hilarious and heart-tugging, we follow her on her most important journey—that of self-discovery. A thoroughly enjoyable read!"
— Juliette Fay, author of Shelter Me and Deep Down True

"For fans of the Good Wife, Catherine McKenzie’s Forgotten is a pure page-turning pleasure that combines a clever premise, a compelling character, and law-meets-life to keep you entirely entranced."
— Gwendolen Gross, author of The Orphan Sister

"Funny and smart, FORGOTTEN is a wild romp with a fascinating question at its heart: if you’d been erased from your day-to-day life, how would you begin to put the pieces of your existence back together? McKenzie gives us a clever and capable heroine to sort it all out."
— Kate Ledger, author of Remedies
